Aneesh Chopra was appointed by President Obama in 2009 as the first Chief Technology Officer of the United States, a role in which he led efforts to open government data, accelerate health IT adoption, and promote innovation across federal agencies. His work on the Blue Button initiative — which gave veterans digital access to their health records — became a model for patient data access nationwide.

Before his government service, Chopra served as Virginia's Secretary of Technology and managed health care investments at the Advisory Board Company. His career has consistently focused on using technology and open data to improve public services, with a particular emphasis on healthcare.

Using Data to Fix Healthcare

After leaving the White House, Aneesh Chopra co-founded CareJourney, a healthcare analytics platform that uses claims data to help providers, payers, and health systems measure quality, identify high-performing networks, and reduce costs. The company has become a key player in the push toward value-based care in the American healthcare system.

As Co-Founder and President of CareJourney, Chopra is applying the same open-data philosophy he championed in government to the private sector. His vision is a healthcare system where data transparency drives competition, improves outcomes, and ultimately lowers costs for patients — a mission that connects his public service career directly to his entrepreneurial work.
