Inheriting and Expanding an Empire

Mukesh Ambani joined Reliance Industries in 1981 at age 24, learning the petrochemicals business under his father, Dhirubhai Ambani, who founded the company. After Dhirubhai's death in 2002, the Ambani empire was divided between Mukesh and his brother Anil. Mukesh took control of the oil, petrochemicals, and manufacturing businesses — and proceeded to expand Reliance far beyond its industrial roots.

Under Mukesh Ambani's leadership, Reliance Industries became India's most valuable company. He oversaw the construction of the world's largest oil refining complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat, and diversified aggressively into telecommunications, retail, media, and digital services — transforming Reliance from a petrochemicals conglomerate into a technology-driven consumer platform.

The Jio Revolution and Reliance Retail

Mukesh Ambani's most transformative move was the 2016 launch of Jio, a 4G telecommunications network that offered free voice calls and ultra-cheap data to hundreds of millions of Indians. Jio single-handedly collapsed mobile data prices in India, bringing over 400 million subscribers online and catalyzing the country's digital economy. It was the largest startup in telecommunications history.

Building on Jio's digital infrastructure, Ambani expanded Reliance Retail into India's largest retail chain — spanning grocery, electronics, fashion, and pharmacy — with thousands of stores and a rapidly growing e-commerce operation. He attracted investments from global partners and positioned Reliance at the intersection of India's consumer, digital, and energy transitions.
