LinkedIn ProfileAbout
Tobi Lütke founded Shopify in 2006 after building an online snowboard shop and realizing the e-commerce tools available were inadequate. The German-born Canadian entrepreneur grew Shopify into a commerce platform powering millions of merchants worldwide, with a market cap exceeding $100 billion.

The Accidental Commerce Platform
Tobi Lütke didn't set out to build an e-commerce empire. In 2004, the German-born programmer wanted to sell snowboards online and couldn't find a platform that met his standards. So he built his own. That storefront became Snowdevil, and the software behind it became Shopify. By 2006, Tobi Lütke had pivoted from selling snowboards to selling the tools for anyone to sell anything online — a decision that turned a side project into one of the most valuable technology companies in the world.
Tobi Lütke's background as a self-taught programmer and Ruby on Rails core contributor shaped Shopify's product-first culture from the start. He moved from Koblenz, Germany, to Ottawa, Canada, in 2002 and built the company there rather than relocating to Silicon Valley. Under his leadership, Shopify has powered millions of merchants across 175 countries, processing hundreds of billions of dollars in gross merchandise volume annually.
Building the Anti-Amazon
Tobi Lütke has positioned Shopify as the infrastructure layer for independent commerce — the counterweight to Amazon's marketplace model. Where Amazon aggregates merchants into a single storefront, Shopify gives each merchant their own brand, their own domain, and their own customer relationship. It's a philosophical difference as much as a technical one, and Tobi Lütke has been vocal about his belief that the internet should enable independent entrepreneurship rather than consolidate power in a few platforms.
As CEO, Tobi Lütke has expanded Shopify from a simple storefront builder into a full commerce operating system covering payments (Shopify Payments), fulfillment (Shopify Fulfillment Network), point-of-sale, B2B wholesale, and AI-powered tools for merchants. The company went public in 2015 and its market cap has exceeded $100 billion, making Tobi Lütke one of the most successful founder-CEOs in Canadian technology history.
